Grid Connection Process — Step by Step
Connecting solar panels to the electricity grid may seem complicated, but with the right support the process runs smoothly and predictably. We have completed this process hundreds of times and know every step inside out.
Technical conditions
We submit the application to the grid operator for technical conditions. Review takes 20–30 working days. We monitor status and communicate with the grid operator on your behalf.
Electrical design
A certified electrical designer prepares the system design in accordance with the grid operator's technical conditions and LVS EN standards. Often done in parallel with step one.
Installation
Certified electricians install the panels, inverter and electrical wiring in accordance with the design. We often carry out installation while the grid application is being processed — saving overall time.
Connection and meter
The grid operator inspects the installation and approves connection. A bidirectional meter is installed, recording both energy consumed and energy fed to the grid.
Micro-generator registration
The system is registered as a micro-generator and net metering begins. You receive a certificate and can track generation through the inverter monitoring app.
Commissioning
You receive the full documentation package, a system walkthrough and monitoring setup. The system is ready to generate energy and save money.
What Is a Micro-Generator?
A micro-generator is an electricity generation unit with a capacity of up to 11.04 kW that a homeowner can register through a simplified process. This is the most important category for private home solar panel systems — the vast majority fall here.
- Micro-generator (up to 11.04 kW) — simplified process, no complex building permit required
- Mini-generator (11.04–43.5 kW) — slightly more complex process, suitable for larger homes and small businesses
- Small power plant (above 43.5 kW) — full connection process, typically for businesses
Net Metering — How It Works
Latvia operates a net metering system — generated and consumed energy are offset against each other. This means:
- During the day — generated energy is used directly in the home, surplus feeds into the grid
- At night and on cloudy days — energy is drawn from the grid as normal
- At year-end — final settlement; if you have generated more than consumed, surplus energy is compensated at the trading price
- In summer — the system generates more than the home uses, surplus accumulates as a credit
- In winter — lower generation, drawing from the summer credit balance
Net metering means you don't need to worry about the instantaneous balance — the grid acts as a virtual battery. This makes solar panels effective even without a physical battery.
Documents Required for the Grid Application
You provide
Land register extract or proof of ownership, boundary plan or site plan. Property ownership documents are usually sufficient.
We prepare
The electrical installation design, inverter and panel compliance certificates, the application form and all documents required by the grid operator — at no extra charge.
Installation and Grid Connection — Parallel Process
One of the most common questions: "Can panels be installed before the grid approval?" The answer is yes, with a condition. The physical installation (panels on the roof, cable mounting) can be done before the final approval, but the system may only be switched on and connected to the grid after the grid operator's approval.
We plan installation so that it takes place during the grid operator's review period — significantly reducing the total time from application to a working system.
Grid application, document submission, status tracking, coordination — we do everything. You don't need to contact the grid operator or know the procedures. We keep you informed at every step and alert you if your involvement is needed.
